چکیده
We analyze a sample of 32 galaxies for which a dynamical estimate of the mass of the hot stellar component, M bulge , is available. For each of these galaxies, we calculate the mass of the central black hole, M • , using the tight empirical correlation between M • and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion. The frequency function N [log(M • /M bulge)] is reasonably well described as a Gaussian with log(M • /M bulge) ≈ −2.90 and standard deviation ∼ 0.45; the implied mean ratio of black hole to bulge mass is a factor ∼ 5 smaller than generally quoted in the literature. We comment on marginal evidence for a lower, average black-hole mass fraction in more massive galaxies, which should be investigated using larger samples. The total mass density in BHs in the local Universe is estimated to be ∼ 5 × 10 5 M ⊙ Mpc −3 , consistent with that inferred from high redshift (z ∼ 2) AGNs.

In classical loss cone theory, stars are supplied to a central black hole via gravitational scattering onto low angular momentum orbits. Higher feeding rates are possible if the gravitational potential near the black hole is non-axisymmetric and the orbits are chaotic. Motivated by recently published, self-consistent models, we evaluate rates of stellar capture and disruption in triaxial nuclei...

Recent X–ray observations of intense high–speed outflows in quasars suggest that supercritical accretion on to the central black hole may have an important effect on a host galaxy. I revisit some ideas of Silk and Rees, and assume such flows occur in the final stages of building up the black hole mass. It is now possible to model explicitly the interaction between the outflow and the host galax...

The observations and interpretation of broad iron lines in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies are reviewed. The line profiles observed from MCG–6-30-15 and NGC 3516 show extended red wings to the line explained by large gravitational red-shifts. The results are consistent with the emission expected from an X-ray irradiated flat accretion disc orbiting very close to a black hole. Results fr...

We analyze published reverberation mapping data for three Seyfert galaxies (NGC 3227, NGC 3516, and NGC 4593) to refine the mass estimate for the supermassive black hole in the center of each object. Treatment of the data in a manner more consistent with other large compilations of such masses allows us to more securely compare our results to wider samples of data, e.g., in the investigation of...
